Home, car or office lockout: a quick guide

Each kind of lockout has its own first steps. Here is a quick checklist for all three.

Home

Check other doors and windows you can reach safely, and whether anyone nearby holds a spare. If not, call a locksmith and have ID ready.

Car

Check whether your roadside assistance plan covers lockouts. If anyone is trapped inside, call 911. Otherwise, a locksmith can open most vehicles without damage. See car lockouts.

Office

Contact the building manager or a keyholder first. If you call a locksmith, be ready to show you are authorized to enter. See office lockouts.

Staying safe while you wait

  • Wait somewhere well lit or in a nearby business.
  • Keep your phone charged and share your location with someone.
  • Confirm the locksmith's business name when they arrive.
